What is Fitbit?

Fitbits are wireless-enabled devices that monitor and track physical fitness. Fitbits have evolved at a rapid pace, so if you still have an old Fitbit Charge band from 2014/2015, you’re missing out on a lot of innovative features.  Recent models of Fitbit are advanced pieces of technology made both for everyday use and activity tracking. Fitbit activity trackers and smartwatches serve as heart rate monitors, sleep trackers, stress monitors and have many more functions related to health and fitness.

Fitbit was established in 2007 and came to rise as an American (California-based) consumer electronics and fitness company. Google acquired the brand in 2021, which means that the fitness tracker pioneer is now working hand in hand with one of the world’s smartest tech companies. I won’t lie… I have high expectations for the next generation of Fitbit products!

The Best Fitbit For Sports

Fitbits have been around long enough to build a reputation for the quality of its fitness trackers. All Fitbit devices count steps so if you only want a step tracker you can buy any cheap Fitbit on the market. If you’re after tracking your cardio, fitness, sleep, and/or want a smartwatch, here are the five best Fitbit in 2022:

  • Fitbit Sense
  • Fitbit Versa 3
  • Fitbit Charge 5
  • Fitbit Inspire 2
  • Fitbit Versa 2

Fitbit App vs Fitbit Premium

Fitbit has over 30 million active users worldwide, so there’s no doubt their fitness tracking app hits the mark. Here’s what you can expect from the free of charge Fitbit App and the subscription only Fitbit Premium platform:

Fitbit App

The Fitbit App is free to download and is compatible with both Android and iOS. The App shows your workout summaries in great details, steps, calories burnt, resting heart rate, sleep summary, and more. The interface is user-friendly: uncongested, easy to navigate and somewhat customizable (you can select the order in which you want to see statistics reported and can delete sections, eg. if you don’t track your water intake you can hide that section). I find my Fitbit app workout summaries better and more insightful than my Apple watch ones.

Fitbit Premium

My advice: sign-up for the free trial to see for yourself whether it’s worthwhile for you. Fitbit Premium is a paying service for those that want deeper insights into their health and fitness (eg. detailed charts on your activity regime or detailed sleep quality data). Fitbit Premium subscribers also get access to extra content from Fitbit’s partners at no extra cost: workouts, nutrition inspiration, recipes and meditation sessions to name a few.

Fitbit Workout Summary Examples

The Fitbit app also shows calories burned during the workout in a graph format, the number of steps I took during my workout.
